Continuing SMS install
I worked on our SMS install for a while today. My goal is to get Software Updates working properly. I believe that I have both the security and office piece in place and configured properly on the SMS site server. Hoever, according to the documentation I should be able to verify software update inventory results within either SMS report viewer or resource explorer (see page 32 in module 9 in SMS book from training). I don’t get any results using reports against my laptop (which I set up as the pre-production/pre-staging machine) nor do I even see the Software Updates node under the hardware section of resource explorer.
Read that this is probably b/c the scan tool is not installed. However, that document is sms 4.0 specific. Found this after a search on MS. Downloaded and installed patches required and installed SMSITMU.msi choosing the SMS server as the synchonization host computer. Will need to check to determine if this is appropriate. Defined my laptop as the test computer during the install.
According to my class notes, the next step after sms scan tools are installed is to districute the scan tool MBSA (MS Baseline Security Analyzer). I downloaded from MS (v 2.0) and installed on the client. My notes indicate that it will take approximately one hour on the client to generate information abouth the system.

well…that client piece appears to work. I can now see a software updates subsection to the hardware profile within the SMS Admin console for the machine onto I installed. It populates with installed hotfixes and security updates. Next step is to utilize this info to apply appropriate pending pathes to the workstation…that will probably be done as an advertisement (Question is how do I get it to apply to the test group only and then cascade to the production environment only after I authorize….how do the logistics of that work???). Another day…
